Can statistics build empathy, or do we need individual stories?
John has said since 2014 that statistics are needed yet cold, so he tells individual stories, and in 2016 that numbers can block empathy. In 2025 he called graphs a terrible way to convey suffering, yet the only way he knows to tell millions of stories at once. Hank said in 2013 that people struggle to understand statistics, and in 2025 that spread-out deaths fail to register as a catastrophe.
