Hank announces the birth of John's son on January 20 with a mock-epic history of John and Sarah (high school, reconnecting through Sarah's boxing sparring partner, a year of emails, the rose-staircase proposal, an Alabama wedding), quotes the sleep-deprived new father, asks viewers to give the baby a world without malaria, and hands over to Maureen Johnson for John's paternity leave.

What is said

The parts of the video and what is said in each (★ — how much it matters to the video).

00:00:00 — January 20 is Henry Green's birthday; cue the epic music

00:00:12 — Mock-epic history: high school, the sparring-partner ex-girlfriend in a Chicago boxing club, a year of emails, dates, the rose-staircase proposal

  • ★★ In Hank's telling, John was a senior in high school in 1995 and took little notice of freshman Sarah, who remembers the 'charmingly nerdy upperclassman'; they had few interactions. (playful) — 00:00:12 · John Green, Sarah Urist Green
  • ★★ Ten years later Sarah's sparring partner at a Chicago boxing club turned out to be John's ex-girlfriend, also from Alabama, which reconnected John and Sarah. (playful) — 00:00:41 · Chicago (city), Sarah Urist Green
  • ★★ John and Sarah then exchanged emails for over a year, roughly 'the length of a short Russian novel', which led to a string of dates in 2004. (playful) — 00:01:09 · Sarah Urist Green
  • ★★ In 2005 Sarah came home to a red rose on every step up to her fourth-floor apartment and John at the top with more roses and a ring; they married in a large Alabama church. — 00:01:34 · Sarah Urist Green

00:01:51 — Wedding in an Alabama church; life with their puppy Fireball Wilson 'Willie' Roberts

00:02:04 — Henry is born early on January 20; named after John's brother or grandfather; John's sleep-deprived quotes on the birth and fatherhood

  • ★ Hank jokes the baby was surely named after John's 'younger, smarter, better looking brother', or possibly his grandfather, and will take after his mother, judging by his black hair. (joke) — 00:02:15 · Henry Green, Hank Green
  • ★★ John Green (quoted): Hank relays John's words: the birth was 'freaking weird', Sarah 'worked so hard', fatherhood is 'actually, like, really great', and he has been awake 46 of the last 48 hours. — 00:02:36 · John Green, Sarah Urist Green

00:02:57 — John's baby needs gifts: give him a world without malaria via the sidebar link

  • ★★★ Hank says John's baby needs gifts and asks viewers to follow the sidebar link to give him the only gift he wants: a world without malaria. — 00:02:57 · malaria

00:03:15 — John's paternity leave begins; Maureen Johnson is up on Friday

  • ★★ Hank declares John's paternity leave begun and tells Maureen Johnson he will see her on Friday. — 00:03:15 · Maureen Johnson

Humor (significant)

  • Hank's epic narration explains how Sarah and John reconnected after ten years. — 00:00:41

“Sarah was punching John Green's ex-girlfriend in the face one day,”

  • The year of emails between John and Sarah, Hank intones, has been studied. — 00:01:24

“from scholars in the field of technology-based literature to scholars in the field of true love.”

  • Hank speculates on the origin of the baby's name. — 00:02:15

“We can only assume that Henry was named after John's younger, smarter, better looking brother.”

  • Looking at the newborn's mass of black hair, Hank predicts whom he will resemble. — 00:02:21

“he will take after his mother, for which we are all intensely grateful.”
