In March 2009 John promised to eat one Peep for every $10 Nerdfighters raised for the Uncultured Project, on 23 March. Nerdfighters ate more than 200 Peeps on his behalf, but illness and doctors' orders stopped him, and in April 2009 he said he had never eaten the 317 Peeps and would do 317 of something else instead.
